Natural Baby Products v/s Toxic & Synthetic Baby Products

What are you putting on your baby's skin?

There are several products claiming to be for "Babies". But do you really know what's in them? Let me ask you, have you ever took the time to look on the back and research the ingredients.

I have added a full report " NO MORE TOXIC BATH" by The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics. Click here to view report

This report includes:
  • Product Test Result
  • Lists of Multiple Chemicals In Tub
  • & So Much More
One thing that really gets under my skin is seeing product ingredients that claim to be natural and yet they only include 1-2 ingredients that I would even classify as natural and the rest are toxins. And what I find even more troubling is the products they are making for children (babies) are sometimes worst than adults! Most people assume that the FDA wouldn't allow such a thing, but here is some news for you...they don't care 2 cents about making sure the products being sold are safe. It has always been and it will always be about making money.

But people are becoming smarter in their purchases and they're choosing safer, more natural products. So I encourage you to become a part of the few who actually care about what's in your products...only seek and patronize those that care for your well being by making products that help to heal...not to destroy and kill! This week I will explore products that claim to be safe for babies and I will expose those that are merely playing word semantics. I have found several products for babies...let's just see what the ingredients say, shall we.

I have chosen a few toxic/synthetic ingredients to highlight

Up first...

Baby Magic Calming Baby Bath -Lavender and Chamomile

(View ingredients on website here)
Ingredients:
Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80, PEG 150 Distearate, Sorbitol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender/Lavanda) Extract /Extracto, Chamomilla Recutita (Matriacaria) Flower Extract /Extracto, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate), Polyquaternium-10, Citric Acid, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Glycereth-2 Cocoate, Benzoic Acid.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate - This chemical thickens when salt is added in the formula, it produces high levels of foam to give the illusion it its rich, thick and expensive. It's irritating to the scalp, it can cause hair loss and if it gets in the blood it can cause an array of problems. You can find out more here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/706089/SODIUM_LAURETH_SULFATE/

Peg 150 Distearate
- Polyethylene glycol's contribute to stripping the skin's natural moisture. Potentially contaminated with or breaking down into chemicals linked to cancer or other significant health problems. Found in cosmetics, creams and foods. You can find out more here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/721473/PEG-150/

Fragrance (synthetic) -
Many compounds found in fragrance are carcinogenic, or otherwise toxic. Fragrances can cause headaches, dizziness, rashes, skin discoloration. coughing and vomiting, and allergic skin irritations.

Up next...

JOHNSON'S® Baby Creamy Baby Oil, Aloe Vera & Vitamin E
(View ingredients on website here)
Ingredients:
Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Coco Glucoside, Glycine Soya (Soybean) Oil, Dimethicone, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Hydrogenated Palm Glyceride, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), Tetrasodium EDTA, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Extract, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Glyceryl Oleate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice, Titanium Dioxide, Mica

Phenoxyethanol - Possible connection to reproductive or developmental harm to fetus, potential for reduced fertility, classified as toxic and an irritant, potential risks to wildlife and environment through excretion of body product toxins and disposal of cosmetics. You can find out more here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/704811/PHENOXYETHANOL/

Methylparaben &
Propylparaben- Potential breast cancer risk and endocrine disruptor raising concern for impaired fertility or development of fetus, and increased risk for certain cancers, itching, burning and blistering of skin. A close cousin of benzoic acid: poisonous and moderately toxic it is found in body products. You can find out more here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/703937/METHYLPARABEN/

Mineral Oil - A derivative of petroleum, this additive clogs pores, locks in toxins, suffocates and dries skin and inhibits your skins natural oil production further increasing dehydration. Causes testicular tumors in the fetus, deposits accumulate in the lymph nodes and prevent absorption of vitamin A from the intestines. Found in blush, baby oil, lotions, foundation and creams. You can find out more here: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/703977/MINERAL_OIL/

Finally...

JOHNSON'S® Vanilla Oatmeal Baby Lotion
(View ingredients on website here)
Ingredients:
Water, Mineral Oil, Glycerin, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Ceteareth-6, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Sodium Citrate, Stearyl Alcohol, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Tocopheryl Acetate.

As you can see Johnson & Johnson use pretty much the same ingredients in their products. I tried to track down lotions made by Sesame Street & Gerber...it seems as though they have discounted a lot of their products...I wonder why...lol.

The ones I listed here are only 2 brands of a thousand. I encourage you to stop right now, if your at home go look into your bathroom cabinets or where ever you store your bath and body products. Look at your ingredients, do you recognize any of the names...heck you probably can't pronounce 90% of them. Become more aware of the products you buy for yourself and most importantly your children. I have so much more to come.....stay tuned!

Hi Elissa,
Yes they really need a skull and crossbones on their products. Why they would have an synthetic emulsifier as their #2 ingredient is just ridiculous!
