Eczema & Your Baby!

What is Eczema?

(Eczema also known as Atopic Dermatitis), This is an inflammatory condition of the skin that manifests variously as itching, skin inflammation, dry, thickened skin, and tiny blisters that burst, weep, and can become infected. It is a very difficult problem to treat - particularly if the cause isn't found. Look for the cause among allergies, low stomach acid, stress, poor or inadequate diet, dysfunctional immune system, or build up of toxins. "I think however it's an easy problem...it's what your eating or it's comes from what your putting on your skin. But for those that think highly of all doctor's, let's just go with it being a difficult problem to solve :-) ". Eczema isn't contagious, but because it's intensely itchy & scratching can be a problem for the child.

Some will argue to say that eczema is inherited. I disagree, lifestyle is inherited (that's handed down). If you have poor eating habits and you live a poor lifestyle (example- smoking, doing drugs, applying toxic & synthetic body products on your body, promiscuous behavior...etc) they all play a apart in your lifestyle. In truth, this is what you hand down!
If your eating habits are poor...your child eating habits will be poor. POOR=POOR
If your applying natural products to you and your child bodies and you're living a healthy lifestyle, they too, will continue that healthy lifestyle. HEALTHY=HEALTHY

How common is eczema?

Eczema is very common in children. And it's getting even more common.
  • Between 15 in 100 and 20 in 100 school-age children get eczema.

  • Most children with eczema (about 90 in 100) get it before they are 5. Many get it when they are babies.

  • About 60 in 100 children with eczema grow out of it in their teens.

  • Between 2 in 100 and 10 in 100 adults have eczema.
-According to BMJ Group Medical Reference

Useful tips to treat your baby's eczema
  • Try to keep your baby's skin from becoming too dry. Many experts now believe that daily bathing can be helpful for babies with eczema. Just don't make the water too warm, because very warm water dries out the skin faster than lukewarm water.
  • Use a mild soap, and wash and shampoo (My Herbal Baby- Baby Wash) your baby at the end of her bath so she isn't sitting in soapy water. As soon as you get your baby out of the tub, pat skin dry (don't rub). Then promptly apply a liberal amount of moisturizer or emollient — an ointment, cream, or lotion that "seals in" the body's own moisture (My Herbal Baby- Baby Oil).
  • Allow skin to breathe (and not become overheated) by dressing your baby in smooth natural fabrics, like cotton. Avoid wool and other scratchy materials, which can irritate very sensitive skin.
  • Switch to mild, fragrance-free soaps and shampoos, or those made for sensitive skin. Use mild, fragrance-free detergent for washing clothes and bedding. Avoid fabric softeners.
  • Rapid changes in temperature can make eczema worse, so try not to let your baby get too hot and then cool quickly, or vice versa.
  • Help your baby avoid scratching. She may try to get relief by scratching with her hands or by rubbing her face against the sheet when she sleeps. But scratching and rubbing can further irritate or inflame her skin and make matters much worse.
  • Use the softest sheets possible in her crib, and keep your baby's nails short. Put her to bed with cotton mittens or socks on her hands, if she'll tolerate them.
  • During a flare-up, you can try applying cool compresses to the area several times a day, followed by a moisturizer (Jamion's Natural Zinc Cream is great for eczema too).
Foods you should avoid if your child has eczema (Hell, you need to avoid them period)!

White flour - Try Spelt
White sugar - Try Cain or Coconut
White rice - Try wild rice or Quinoa
Cow Milk - Try Almond Milk
Cheese - Try Almond Cheese
Store bought Juice - Make fresh juice
Processed Foods(boxed & can goods) - Make fresh daily homemade meals

Just to name a few...

What I would like for you to do now is look closely at your child's skin to see if you can spot any skin irritations. Stop eczema before it becomes a problem. Use natural products and feed your children healthy vitamin and mineral enriched meals...Boost their Immune System!

Many thanks for your educational document. I am in fact at work at the moment! So I have to go off without reading all I'd like. However I've added your blog to my RSS feed so that I can take my time to go via your web page.

That this made a big difference for each child in what they could cope with and how they managed to go to sleep.
