How to Identify Toxic Plastics in Your Home

Picture
Plastics are everywhere. They're in our home. In our refrigerator. In our bathroom. Everywhere you look plastic containers are everywhere. But how safe are they? Some plastics have toxins that can leak into our foods. Here is a guide to help you identify the different types of plastics you encounter every day. They are easily identified by the recycling numbers printed on the plastic.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)

This is the plastic used in water and soda bottles. Also ketchup, jam, jelly, peanut butter jars.

SAFE. No known leeching chemicals from this plastic. But it is recommended you don't reuse these containers because bacteria can easily build up

High-density polyethylene (HDPE)

This plastic is used for milk bottles, shampoo bottles, shopping bags, trash bags, margarine tubs, yogurt containers, and the bags inside cereal boxes.

SAFE. Not known to leech harmful chemicals.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

The meats and cheeses you get from the grocery store is wrapped in this plastic. Also found in cooking oil bottles and some water bottles.

BAD STUFF. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate(DEHP) which is found in PVC can leech out into your food according to the National Institutes of Health.
Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate(DEHP)is a carcinogen.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)

Found in squeeze bottles, bread bags, and freezer bags. Also in grocery bags, cling wrap, opaque baby bottles, and paper towel and toilet paper wrappers.

SAFE. Not known to leak any toxins

Polypropylene (PP)

Found in disposable diapers, yogurt cups, ketchup bottles, and margarine tubs.

SAFE. The only time this is hazardous is during the production of the plastic.

Polystyrene (PS, Styrofoam)

Coffee cups, take out containers, plastic eating utensils. Also found in some toys.

BAD STUFF. Contains benzene, butadiene, and styrene which are suspected carcinogens and hormone disrupters which can leech into food.

Polycarbonate (PC)

Found in water cooler bottles, microwave oven cookware, medicine bottles, baby bottles, and food storage containers.

BAD STUFF. Polycarbonate contains a chemical called biphenyl-A which is a suspected hormone disrupter and carcinogen. This is known to leech into food. It is more dangerous as the plastic ages and it is also not recommended that you heat this plastic.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to use glass containers and products whenever possible. But as time goes on it is getting harder and harder to do this.
  • Another kind of plastic out there is polylactide plastics (PLA). It is produced using starches from potatoes, corn, and sugar cane. It biodegrates in 2 years. Other plastics biodegrate in 100 years. This plastic doesn't contain any of the harmful toxins listed above but it is still too early to know if this plastic is harmful or not.

Ten Synthetic Ingredients To Avoid In The Products You Buy

1. Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea — These are the most commonly used preservatives after the parabens. They are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology).

2. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl, and Ethyl Paraben — Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Methyl paraben combines benzoic acid with the methyl group of chemicals.

3. Petrolatum — Petrolatum is mineral oil jelly, and mineral oil causes a lot of problems when used on the skin—it can produce photosensitivity (i.e., promotes sun damage), and it tends to interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dry skin and chapping.

4. Propylene Glycol — Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant.

5. PVP/VA Copolymer — A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, wave sets and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons.

6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — This synthetic substance is used in shampoos for its detergent and foam-building abilities. It causes eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation "comes from coconut". (although the jury is still kind of out on this, I would avoid it if you can)

7. Stearalkonium Chloride — A chemical used in hair conditioners and creams. Causes allergic reactions. Stearalkonium chloride was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, and is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which do help hair health.

8. Synthetic Colors — The synthetic colors used to supposedly make a cosmetic "pretty" should be avoided at all costs, along with hair dyes. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6. Synthetic colors are believed to be cancer-causing agents. If a cosmetic has them in it, don't use the cosmetic.

9. Synthetic Fragrances — The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply say "Fragrance". Some of the problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation, and the list goes on.

10. Triethanolamine (TEA) — Often used in cosmetics to adjust the pH, and used with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.
